About

Berkay Yarder in a dark suit, with a city skyline at night behind him.

I got into engineering through robotics. At fifteen I joined my school’s FRC team and ended up designing the drive system for our competition robot. It taught me that the interesting problems live where software meets physics, and that’s still what I want to work on.

I chose Technical Computer Science at Twente because it lets me go deep on both sides. So far I’ve written a stack-based processor in Clash, deployed a pruned and quantised YOLO model on a Hailo NPU, and scheduled a safety-critical cabin monitoring system with Rate Monotonic analysis. This year my minor adds circuits, sensors and the modelling and control of a real wheeled robot.

Outside the lab I mostly work with people instead of machines. I think the two belong together: the best engineers I’ve met are also the ones who can keep a team together when things go wrong.

Next, I want to work on safety-critical embedded systems, ideally in the defence and aerospace sector, and do a master’s in Embedded Systems.

Experience

2026 to now

Vice President and HR Manager, ESN Twente

ESN Twente is the Enschede section of the Erasmus Student Network. We help international and exchange students at the University of Twente feel at home: welcome weeks, a buddy programme, trips, social events and practical help in their first months. Everyone involved is a volunteer.

As Vice President I work with the President on the direction of the section. As HR Manager I look after recruiting, onboarding and keeping volunteers and committee members motivated through the year. I also maintain the section’s WordPress website.

2023

Software engineering trainee, Peak Games

I shadowed software engineers at a large mobile game studio in Istanbul to learn how production games are built.

2021 to 2023

Robotics software engineer, FRC Team FMWill

Drive system, PID tuning and debugging between matches, plus workshops for new members. Read the project page.

Outside the lab

Istanbul

Charity bazaar for stray animals

I organised it from the first idea to the day itself: vendors, promotion, volunteer schedules and running it on the day. The money went to the adoption, treatment and feeding of stray animals.

High school

Supply drive

I coordinated collecting and handing out educational supplies at FMV Işık Science High School for students who needed them.

7 years

Basketball

Licensed player with the Turkish Basketball Federation, including a stretch as team captain. It’s where I first learned to keep a group focused when the score is against you.

Education

2024 to 2027

BSc Technical Computer Science, University of Twente

9.9 on the module 2 Software Systems project, 9.1 on the module 1 project (the top score), and the Best Project Award in module 4. Minor courses: Circuits & Electronics, Sensors, Modelling & Control.

2020 to 2024

FMV Işık Science High School, Istanbul

Graduated with 94/100. AP Scholar with Honor (Physics 5, Microeconomics 5, Calculus AB 4).
